Pet Food Toxicity: Chocolate, Grapes, Onion Among Dangerous Items

Veterinarians in Ecuador and Spain warn that several common household foods can be lethal to dogs and cats. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs metabolize slowly, leading to nervous‑system and cardiac problems. Grapes and raisins cause acute kidney failure, while onions, garlic and leeks damage red blood cells and can cause severe anemia. Xylitol, a sugar substitute found in sugar‑free gum and candies, triggers a rapid insulin release that can result in life‑threatening hypoglycaemia. Other hazardous items include avocado, caffeine, cooked bones, raw dough with yeast, nuts, alcohol and heavily seasoned or fatty foods. Pet owners should avoid feeding any human food that contains these ingredients and seek veterinary advice immediately if ingestion is suspected. Inducing vomiting without professional guidance can worsen damage, so a prompt phone consultation with a veterinarian is recommended.
