Pet health: Risks of food refusal and behavioral changes
Pet owners are advised to monitor changes in appetite and behavior closely, as these can indicate serious underlying health issues. In cats, refusing food for 24 to 48 hours poses a life-threatening risk of hepatic lipidosis, also known as fatty liver disease. If a cat stops eating or drinking, immediate veterinary intervention is required.
Regarding behavioral changes, animal psychologist Rebecca Bühlmann notes that while attributing human-like moods to pets can be anthropomorphic, animals often mirror the stress or nervousness of their owners. Changes in temperament, such as a dog refusing walks or a cat becoming uncharacteristically irritable, may actually be signs of physical discomfort or unfitness rather than mere bad moods. Owners should observe these shifts carefully to determine if medical attention is necessary.
