Pet Heatstroke Threats Escalate During Heatwaves Across Canada and Britain

Extreme temperatures are prompting animal‑welfare groups in both Canada and the United Kingdom to warn pet owners about the risk of heatstroke. In Saskatchewan, outreach coordinator Jemma Omidian of the Saskatchewan SPCA explained that dogs, especially seniors, puppies and brachycephalic breeds, can suffer fatal heatstroke in minutes. She cautioned that parked cars become ovens even with windows cracked and advised owners to keep pets indoors, provide water, use fans and avoid leaving animals in vehicles.

In southern England, forecasts predict temperatures of 33‑35 °C, raising similar concerns. UK animal‑welfare experts highlighted seven dog breeds most vulnerable to overheating and urged owners to walk dogs during cooler morning or evening hours, test pavement heat, maintain fresh water, and avoid shaving coats while allowing regular grooming. Both advisories stress monitoring for excessive panting, discolored gums, vomiting or collapse and taking immediate action to cool affected animals.
