Pet hunger linked to rising food insecurity in the U.S
Food insecurity in the United States is deeply linked to pet hunger, affecting approximately 30 million pets living in households where people struggle to afford food. A survey by PetSmart Charities indicates that awareness of this issue remains low, with only 31% of respondents stating they are very aware of pet hunger within homes.
Many pet owners make significant personal sacrifices to ensure their animals are fed. According to Meals on Wheels America, one in five seniors will skip their own meals to feed their pets. Additionally, 56% of pet owners who struggle with food costs report reducing other life expenses to afford pet food, while 13% have considered rehoming or surrendering their pets due to financial difficulties.
Addressing pet food needs through human services organizations may help reduce the number of preventable animal surrenders in shelters.
