Pet insurance demand rises amid increasing veterinary costs in Czechia

Rising costs for veterinary care in the Czech Republic are driving interest in pet insurance. As diagnostic methods and medical procedures become more specialized and advanced, the financial burden on pet owners increases. Serious medical interventions, such as surgeries for complex fractures or stomach issues, can cost up to 40,000 CZK, while long-term treatment for oncological diseases can exceed 100,000 CZK.

Currently, six major institutions offer pet insurance in the Czech market. Generali Česká pojišťovna, Direct pojišťovna, Colonnade, and PetExpert (via ČSOB pojišťovna) provide coverage for both dogs and cats. Česká podnikatelská pojišťovna and Halali pojišťovna offer insurance specifically for dogs.

When selecting a policy, experts recommend reviewing age limits, exclusions, and co-payments. Common exclusions include routine vaccinations, deworming, neutering, pregnancy-related care, and pre-existing or congenital conditions. Additionally, owners should verify whether their specific veterinarian is included in the insurer’s network of contracted doctors.
