Pet owners in Portugal advised on heatwave safety measures for dogs and cats

Veterinarians warn that heat waves pose serious health risks to pets, especially brachycephalic breeds, senior animals and those with chronic conditions. Excessive temperatures can lead to dehydration, fatigue and potentially fatal heatstroke.

Owners are urged to provide constant access to fresh water, create cool resting areas, feed smaller or moist meals, limit vigorous activity and avoid unnecessary travel during the hottest parts of the day. Never leave animals unattended in parked vehicles, as interior temperatures can rise rapidly. Early signs of overheating—excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting or loss of coordination—should prompt immediate cooling and veterinary attention.
