Pet owners prioritize animal companionship in travel trends

A survey of 2,000 pet-owning adults conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Subaru reveals significant shifts in travel preferences driven by pet companionship. Approximately 51% of respondents stated that traveling with a pet is preferable to traveling with a human.

Research indicates that 45% of pet owners have declined travel opportunities that could not accommodate their animals. To ensure their pets can join them, 73% of respondents expressed a preference for road trips over flying. The data also highlights a generational divide: 75% of Gen Z and 70% of millennials have taken a pet on a road trip within the last five years, compared to 58% of Gen X and 40% of baby boomers.

Emotional factors play a major role in these decisions. About 47% of owners report feeling guilt when leaving pets behind, and 47% worry about their pet's well-being during their absence. These concerns impact the duration of trips, with 70% of owners stating that leaving a pet behind affects how long they are willing to be away from home.
