Pet ownership influences US travel habits and vehicle preferences

A survey commissioned by Subaru and conducted by Talker Research among 2,000 American drivers reveals that pets are significantly shaping holiday travel and automotive preferences. Approximately 73% of respondents reported they are more likely to choose driving over flying specifically to accommodate their pets.

Research indicates that 68% of pet owners say their animals influence their holiday travel plans, and 45% have declined travel opportunities that could not accommodate their pets. The trend is most pronounced among younger generations, with 75% of Gen Z and 70% of millennials having taken pets on road trips.

These shifting habits are impacting vehicle priorities. Drivers traveling with animals prioritize interior space, visibility to monitor pets, and easy-to-clean surfaces. Specifically, 32% of respondents cited sufficient space for pets, passengers, and luggage as a top priority, while 27% prioritized washable seats and cargo areas.
