Pet ownership trends show dog dominance in Madrid and Mexico City

Data regarding pet ownership reveals distinct trends in Madrid and Mexico City. In Madrid, dogs are the dominant pet across nearly all 21 districts. In areas such as Puente de Vallecas and Carabanchel, dog populations significantly outnumber cats. However, the Latina district stands out as the only area in the capital where cats are more prevalent, with 23,938 cats compared to 22,088 dogs.

In Mexico City, approximately 56 percent of households report owning a pet, according to 2025 data from INEGI. While this represents a majority, it is the lowest percentage among Mexican states, where the national average is 66 percent. Among pet owners in the capital, dogs are the most common, followed by a mix of dogs and cats, with cats alone representing 14 percent of pet-owning households. Surveys also indicate varying public opinions on pet access to commercial establishments, such as self-service and department stores.
