Pet parenting trend grows as economic factors influence lifestyle choices
A growing cultural shift toward “pet parenting” is being observed, with data from The Harris Poll indicating that 40% of Americans would prefer to have a pet over a child. This trend is particularly pronounced among Millennials and Gen Z, with 55% of these younger generations planning their lives around their pets. Many cite economic factors, such as the high cost of raising children and a desire for less responsibility, as primary motivations.
In Italy, the rising cost of living is creating challenges for pet owners and animal shelters. To address this, Maria Chiara Gadda, a deputy for Italia Viva, has proposed extending anti-price-gouging laws to include the donation of veterinary medicines. This legislative proposal aims to provide support to low-income citizens and non-profit animal organizations, mirroring existing models used for human medicinal donations to ensure animal welfare and public health.
