Pet safety: Common foods and seeds that are toxic to dogs
Various dietary items pose significant health risks to dogs, ranging from acute toxicity to physical obstructions. Grapes and raisins are highly dangerous, as even small amounts can lead to acute kidney failure and death, though the exact toxic component remains unidentified. Similarly, poppy seeds contain opioid alkaloids like morphine and codeine, which can affect a dog's central nervous system.
Fruit pits and seeds present both chemical and physical hazards. Apple, peach, cherry, and plum pits contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide when metabolized. Beyond toxicity, large or hard pits can cause choking or intestinal obstructions. Avocado pits and skins contain persin, which may cause vomiting, diarrhea, or respiratory distress.
Other common foods require caution. While honey contains beneficial vitamins and minerals, its high sugar content makes it unsuitable for puppies, overweight dogs, or those with diabetes. Additionally, chocolate is toxic due to theobromine, which can cause digestive issues and circulatory problems in canines.
