Pet safety guide: Risks of feeding cherries and pomegranates to dogs
Pet owners should exercise caution when offering certain fruits to dogs due to potential health risks. While the flesh of cherries and pomegranates may contain antioxidants and vitamins, the associated dangers often outweigh the nutritional benefits.
Cherries pose a significant risk because their pits, stems, and leaves contain amygdalin, which releases hydrogen cyanide when ingested. Additionally, cherry pits present choking hazards and can cause intestinal blockages or digestive tract damage. While the flesh contains Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and fiber, the high sugar content is not ideal for canine health.
Pomegranates are also considered risky for dogs. Although they contain antioxidants like punicalagin, the seeds and rind can cause digestive upset. The seeds specifically present a choking hazard, particularly for smaller breeds. Experts suggest that the negligible nutritional value of pomegranate does not justify the risk of digestive issues or choking.
