Pet safety: Risks of grape and avocado consumption in dogs

Common human foods such as grapes and avocados pose varying levels of risk to dogs.

Grape and raisin ingestion is considered a medical emergency because even a single grape can be toxic to certain dogs. While the exact toxic principle remains unknown, all varieties—including red, green, seeded, and seedless—are potentially poisonous. Because individual sensitivities vary greatly, there is no established safe amount of grape consumption.

Avocados present different risks, primarily due to their high fat content and the presence of persin, a fungicidal toxin. While dogs are generally more resistant to persin than other animals, consuming avocado can lead to gastrointestinal upset. Additionally, the high fat levels in avocados can potentially cause pancreatitis, a serious condition.
