Pet safety warning issued regarding dangerous grain awns

Animal welfare organizations, including Tasso and Vier Pfoten, are warning pet owners about the dangers of grain awns during the summer months from June to August. These sharp, needle-like plant parts from crops such as wheat, barley, and oats can become lodged in a dog or cat's fur.

Once attached, the awns can penetrate the skin with every movement, leading to infections, inflammation, or abscesses. There is also a risk of animals swallowing them or having them enter the nose or ears, which can cause life-threatening damage to the digestive or respiratory tracts.

To protect pets, experts recommend avoiding walking dogs through high grass or grain fields during peak season. Owners are advised to thoroughly inspect their pets after summer walks, paying close attention to the ears, eyes, paws, nose, mouth, and other sensitive areas.
