PET scans may replace painful bone marrow biopsies for rhabdomyosarcoma

A study conducted by Universitätsmedizin Halle, in collaboration with researchers from the Netherlands, Italy, and the USA, suggests that FDG-PET scans may serve as a reliable alternative to painful bone marrow biopsies for patients with rhabdomyosarcoma.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a type of malignant soft tissue tumor that accounts for approximately 60 percent of all soft tissue tumors in children and adolescents. It can spread to the bone marrow, which significantly impacts prognosis and therapy planning. While bone marrow aspiration is currently the gold standard for detecting such spread, it is an invasive and painful procedure that only provides data from the specific site of the puncture.

The study analyzed data from over 300 patients. The findings indicate that PET scans can detect bone marrow involvement with at least the same level of reliability as traditional biopsies. This advancement could spare many young patients, particularly children, from undergoing highly distressing tissue sampling procedures.
