Pet Shop Boys release Alan Turing electronic opera

The Pet Shop Boys have released ‘A Man From the Future’, an eight-part electronic opera chronicling the life of mathematician and codebreaker Alan Turing. The project, which was first performed at the Royal Albert Hall in 2014, arrives twelve years after its initial debut.

The album blends electronic music, chamber orchestration, and narration to explore Turing’s journey from his school years and Cambridge studies to his pivotal role in breaking the German Enigma code at Bletchley Park during World War II. It also addresses his pioneering work in artificial intelligence and the tragic circumstances of his death in 1954 following his prosecution for homosexuality.

The production features a libretto by historian Andrew Hodges, narration by actress Juliet Stevenson, and musical contributions from the Manchester Camerata Octet and the Manchester Grammar School choir.
