Petaling Jaya market suffers repeated flash floods, traders incur losses

A flash flood hit Medan Selera 223 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, for the third (and fifth) time this year after heavy rain caused water to rise up to two metres. The sudden inundation damaged merchandise and equipment, leaving traders with losses of several thousand ringgit. Long‑time vendor Jamaliah Yusoff, 62, reported a loss of more than RM2,000, while another trader said a newly bought kitchen set was ruined, costing about RM3,000 to repair.

Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and the Fire and Rescue Department responded within minutes, monitoring the site and cleaning the water, but no residents were evacuated. Traders expressed fatigue over the recurring floods and urged authorities for a permanent solution.
