Petanca continues to maintain a strong presence in various Spanish regions, though it faces different social dynamics depending on the setting. In rural areas like Villahermosa in Ciudad Real, the sport is a growing tradition. The Club de Petanca de Villahermosa, led by president Julián Sito, has seen its membership grow to 58 people, with the sport being played locally since the 1980s. The club has recently moved toward formal federation in Castilla-La Mancha following infrastructure improvements supported by the local town hall.

In contrast, the sport faces social friction in coastal tourist areas. In Calafell, members of the Mas Mel petanca club have reported tensions with local residents. Neighbors in beachfront buildings have expressed complaints regarding the noise generated by the metal balls, leading to protests and signage in the neighborhood requesting that the players cease their activities during certain hours.
