Petar Bogojevski sparks controversy over comments on women's rights
Petar Bogojevski, leader of the Macedonian Concept party, has drawn widespread criticism following statements regarding the role of women in the family and the necessity of male supervision. In a video released on November 3, Bogojevski claimed that ethnic Albanians do not allow their women to “shame themselves in cafes and the streets of Skopje,” using the community as an example to criticize Macedonian men.
These remarks follow his appearance on the TV Alfa program “Pod lupa,” where he suggested that a man’s reaction to a spouse’s infidelity is not violence, but rather a defense of his dignity. He further asserted that women should be under the supervision of their husbands.
The comments have triggered several institutional responses. The “General Mihailo Apostolski” Military Academy, where Bogojevski serves as a lecturer, announced that competent authorities will review the materials to determine if professional and ethical obligations were breached. Additionally, the Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Services stated that Bogojevski appeared to relativize and justify violence against women and children by framing subordination as a traditional value. Marija Miteva, a government spokesperson, also condemned the remarks, emphasizing that women require respect rather than supervision.
