Petar I and Petar II Petrović Njegoš: Montenegrin rulers died on the same day

Two of Montenegro’s most significant historical rulers, Petar I Petrović Njegoš and his nephew Petar II Petrović Njegoš, passed away on October 31, exactly 21 years apart. Petar I, also known as Saint Peter of Cetinje, died in 1830 at approximately 82 years of age after a long reign. Before his death, he designated his nephew, Radivoje (Rade) Tomov Petrović, as his successor to ensure the continuity of his mission for Montenegro.

Petar II Petrović Njegoš, who became ruler at age 17 following his uncle's death, died in 1851 at the age of 48. He was a prominent philosopher, poet, and statesman who worked to modernize Montenegro and unify its tribes amidst threats from the Ottoman Empire. His literary contributions, including the masterpiece ‘The Mountain Wreath’, are considered pillars of Slavic literature and Montenegrin cultural identity. His reign was marked by efforts to establish stronger state structures, promote education, and build alliances with Russia.
