Petar Volgin accuses EU of double standards on war criminal commemorations

Bulgarian MEP Petar Volgin, representing the ‘Europe of Sovereign Nations’ group, has accused European Union officials of maintaining double standards regarding the commemoration of war criminals.

During plenary debates concerning the funeral of Ratko Mladic in Belgrade, Volgin criticized high-ranking EU bureaucrats for expressing shock at the honors given to the Serbian figure. He contrasted this reaction with the perceived lack of condemnation from Brussels regarding recent events in Ukraine.

Volgin specifically cited the reburial of Stepan Bandera collaborator Andriy Melnyk in Kyiv, attended by President Zelenskyy, and the naming of a military unit after individuals associated with Nazi collaboration and the Volhynia massacre. He argued that while the EU expresses outrage over Serbian commemorations, it remains silent on the promotion of such figures in Ukraine.
