Pete Buttigieg says America is ready for a gay president

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated during an interview on ‘Meet the Press’ with Kristen Welker that the United States is ready for a gay president. Buttigieg noted that he would not have pursued a presidential campaign in 2020 if he did not believe the country was prepared for such a candidate.

During the interview, Welker addressed a passage from Kamala Harris’s memoir, ‘107 Days,’ in which Harris described Buttigieg as her first choice for a running mate in 2024 but expressed concern that a ticket featuring a Black woman and a gay man might be ‘too big of a risk.’

Buttigieg responded by citing his political history, noting that he won 80% of the vote in his re-election bid for mayor in Indiana after coming out publicly. He emphasized that in his current travels, he finds that voters are primarily focused on economic issues and their own lives rather than a candidate's identity.
