Pete Buttigieg says defeating Trump won’t solve root causes

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg addressed a fundraiser for Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey in Provincetown, warning that simply beating President Donald Trump would not repair the underlying political and economic conditions that enabled his rise. He urged Democrats to present a vision that goes beyond a return to the pre‑Trump status quo, citing universal health care, well‑funded public schools, abortion rights, progressive taxation and LGBTQ+ freedom as essential pillars.

Buttigieg noted his recent tour of about 32 states, including rural areas in Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Georgia, where he encountered independents he described as “future former Republicans.” He argued that voter disappointment with Trump does not automatically translate into Democratic support and that the party must offer a broader, more ambitious agenda. Healey, one of the nation’s first openly lesbian governors, framed Massachusetts as a bulwark against the administration’s attacks on immigrants, health care and LGBTQ+ rights, linking the event to the recent Family Week gathering for LGBTQ+ families on Cape Cod.
