Pete Buttigieg to campaign for New Mexico Democrats

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is traveling to New Mexico to campaign for Democratic candidates Deb Haaland and Representative Gabe Vasquez. The rally, scheduled for September 13 in Las Cruces, will focus on the candidates’ affordability-centered platforms.

Buttigieg’s visit comes as New Mexico recently secured the No. 4 spot on the Democratic National Committee’s 2028 primary calendar. This shift, advocated by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, is intended to increase the influence of Latino and border-state voters in the early stages of the presidential nomination process.

While Buttigieg has stated his immediate focus is on the 2026 elections, he has indicated a strong inclination toward a 2028 presidential run. His recent campaign stops in Nevada and South Carolina align with states that hold significant weight in determining the next Democratic nominee.
