Pete Edochie names ‘Things Fall Apart’ the greatest African book
Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has identified Chinua Achebe’s 1958 novel, ‘Things Fall Apart’, as the greatest book ever written on the African continent. In a recent interview with TV3, Edochie argued that the novel’s immense popularity and strength stem from its decision to tell an African story from an African perspective, rather than focusing on the experiences of colonizers.
While acknowledging that subsequent African authors have attempted to document the continent's history and culture, Edochie maintained that none have matched the impact of Achebe’s work. He encouraged African creatives to lean into their unique history and lived experiences to find success on the global stage.
Edochie also expressed concern regarding the impact of foreign cultural influences on African identity. He shared a personal anecdote about how he once used Western stage names like Elvis Presley and John Wayne before eventually returning to his culturally relevant name, Uwadiegwu.
