Pete Hegseth advances Department of War rename and fires Army chief

The House Armed Services Committee approved an amendment to the FY 2027 National Defense Authorization Act that would rename the Department of Defense as the Department of War. The change, championed by Rep. Ronny Jackson and supported by Rep. Mike Rogers, was passed 44‑12 after extensive debate. The Pentagon estimates the re‑branding would cost about $52 million but says it would not affect the overall defense budget.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth subsequently removed Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George and two other generals without explanation, appointing Gen. Christopher LaNeve as acting chief. The leadership shake‑up comes as the United States continues its military campaign against Iran, adding further uncertainty to the chain of command during an active conflict.
