Pete Hegseth denies reports of undercounted U.S. military deaths

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has rejected reports alleging that the Pentagon has undercounted American military deaths during the ongoing war with Iran. Responding to a report by The Washington Post, Hegseth described the claims as “DISGUSTING and FAKE” and “a complete LIE,” further stating that the newspaper is “worse than Iranian state media.”

The dispute centers on discrepancies between public records and internal accounts. While the Pentagon’s Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) lists 18 deaths, several U.S. officials cited by the Post claim the actual number of service members who have died while deployed in the Middle East since military operations began on February 28 is at least 22, with one official suggesting the figure could be as high as 23.

The reported discrepancy involves personnel serving in the region during the hostilities, though not all deaths were necessarily the direct result of enemy action. The Pentagon has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the difference between its public data and internal casualty accounting.
