Pete Hegseth announces new Autonomous Warfare Command

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has introduced several major initiatives for the U.S. military. At Quantico, he announced the creation of the Autonomous Warfare Command (AUTOWARCOM), aimed at scaling robotic and autonomous capabilities across the Joint Force by October 2027. This includes Project Agincourt to establish new military specialties and Project Meridian to research future battlefield technologies.

Hegseth is also facing significant political backlash. Senator Mark Kelly has called for Hegseth’s immediate removal following the Secretary’s announcement that the public would be allowed to view the execution of Nidal Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting. Hegseth defended the move, stating that “people need to understand that there's serious consequences for these types of things.”

Additionally, Hegseth has focused on shifting military culture and recruitment. He has criticized previous administration efforts, such as advertising on 'The View,' and has emphasized a return to a merit-based, gender-neutral, and 'tough' military ethos. His leadership has also drawn scrutiny from media figures like Jimmy Kimmel, who mocked Hegseth’s appearance and his focus on testosterone-related policies.
