Peter Fonagy rejects ‘snowflake generation’ label in mental health review

Professor Peter Fonagy, head of an independent review into mental health, ADHD, and autism, has rejected claims that young people constitute a ‘snowflake generation.’ In an interview with the BBC, Fonagy stated there has been a genuine rise in mental distress among children and youth, specifically noting increases in anxiety, depression, self-harm, and eating disorders.

Fonagy attributed this trend to a ‘very toxic’ environment driven by social media pressures and economic and employment uncertainty. The review, which was commissioned by Wes Streeting, is expected to be published later this week and is anticipated to influence government policies regarding NHS services, benefits, and support for young people not in education, employment, or training.

Fonagy expressed concern that ongoing debates regarding ADHD and autism diagnoses might obscure the broader mental health crisis. He noted that while some argue increased awareness leads to misattributing normal life stress to mental illness, the challenges faced by the current generation are significant and distinct from previous eras.
