Peter Gray challenges Jonathan Haidt’s social media theories

The debate surrounding the impact of social media on adolescent mental health has intensified following the release of a new book, ‘Restoring Childhood’, by psychology researcher Peter Gray. This work challenges the theories presented in Jonathan Haidt’s bestseller, ‘The Anxious Generation’, which posits that the rise of smartphones and social media is the primary driver behind the decline in teen mental health since 2010.

Hidt’s work has influenced significant policy shifts, including Australia’s nationwide teen social media ban. However, his theories have faced criticism from academics like Candice Odgers, who have questioned the scientific basis of his claims.

In contrast, Gray argues that the decline in mental health is actually linked to reduced autonomy and rigid schooling methods, such as those associated with the Common Core curriculum, rather than digital connectivity. Gray suggests that the adoption of home internet in previous decades may have actually helped restore freedom and connection for teenagers. Critics of Haidt suggest that focusing on social media bans may serve as a distraction from addressing other systemic issues, such as access to mental health services and the modern education system.
