Peter Hegemann awarded Nobel Prize in Medicine for optogenetics research

German researcher Peter Hegemann has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discoveries in the field of optogenetics. Hegemann, a professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin, shares the prize with American researcher Karl Deisseroth and German researcher Georg Nagel.

Before the official announcement, Hegemann initially ignored a callback request from an unknown sender. He only realized the call was from the Nobel Committee after noticing the Swedish country code. Hegemann described being overwhelmed by the news, noting that it takes time to fully realize the magnitude of the achievement.

Colleagues and associates, including representatives from the Max Planck Society, have praised Hegemann for his persistence and willingness to take scientific risks. His breakthrough regarding channelrhodopsins followed a career marked by academic determination, including a decision early in his career to pursue independent research despite the lack of job security.
