Peter Kolawole Obasa, former NYSC Director-General, dies at 81

Colonel Peter Kolawole Obasa, the third Director-General of Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has died at the age of 81. He passed away on Monday, September 28, 2026.

Obasa served as the chief executive of the scheme from 1979 to 1984. He is credited with helping to shape the organization’s early administrative systems and establishing foundations that have supported the scheme for decades.

The current NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, visited the Obasa family in Ilorin, Kwara State, to offer condolences. Nafiu described the late colonel as a pioneering administrator and noted that his work left a lasting mark on the organization. The Obasa family expressed gratitude to the NYSC for recognizing his legacy.
