Peter Levin predicts Pokémon cards could serve as global currency
Peter Levin, founder and managing director of Griffin Gaming Partners, has suggested that the global recognition of Pokémon could allow its trading cards to serve as a form of currency in an extreme apocalyptic scenario. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Levin noted that the franchise has seen a parabolic growth curve since its international expansion in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Levin highlighted that Pokémon is a primary driver of the global trading card game market, distinguishing it from the sports card sector. He observed that the market has moved beyond simple collecting into a significant investment space, claiming that Pokémon cards have outperformed the S&P 500 by 3,000 percent. Other properties mentioned in the context of market growth include One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Digimon, and Magic: The Gathering.
