Peter Maher, legendary Calgary Flames broadcaster, dies at 79

Legendary radio broadcaster Peter Maher has passed away at the age of 79. A member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Maher was the longtime voice of the Calgary Flames, having joined the franchise in 1980 when the team was based in Atlanta.

Throughout a career spanning over three decades, Maher called more than 3,000 games. He was the voice of the Flames during their 1989 Stanley Cup championship and several other Stanley Cup runs. His broadcasting career also included calling the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and the 2005 IIHF World Championship.

The Calgary Flames honored his legacy by naming the broadcast booth in the Scotiabank Saddledome the ‘Peter Maher Broadcast Booth’ and establishing the ‘Peter Maher Award,’ which recognizes players who demonstrate sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.
