Peter Mandelson probe risks collapse as US fails to provide Epstein files

An investigation into Lord Peter Mandelson regarding allegations that he shared confidential government information with Jeffrey Epstein is at risk of collapsing. Investigators believe the unredacted documents are essential, as current evidence consists of partially censored emails that may not reflect the full scope of the communications. The Metropolitan Police initially attempted informal information sharing with the US Department of Justice and the FBI, but received no response. Consequently, British authorities have escalated the request through a formal Mutual Legal Assistance process, a route that could take years to complete.

Mandelson, a former Labour minister, has denied all wrongdoing and expressed regret over his past association with Epstein. The investigation focuses on whether market-sensitive information was leaked during the 2008 financial crisis. Without the requested documents, officials warn the probe may be abandoned due to insufficient evidence.
