Peter Max, influential Pop and psychedelic artist, dies at 88

American artist Peter Max, a central figure in the intersection of Pop art and psychedelia, has died at the age of 88. He passed away on September 14 at a New York hospital after suffering from severe dementia for several years.

Max was widely recognized for his vibrant, color-saturated imagery that epitomized the 1960s counterculture and the “Summer of Love.” His work often featured motifs such as rainbows, stars, and butterflies, blending elements of Art Nouveau and Op art. His influence extended into mainstream commercial culture through posters, consumer products, and major commissions.

Throughout his career, Max illustrated significant events including the 1994 World Cup, two Super Bowls, and the 2000 World Series. His diverse portfolio included designs for a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, a Boeing 777, and several Grammy Awards editions. Born in Berlin, Max emigrated to the United States in 1953 and became a prominent icon of American visual art.
