Peter Max, psychedelic pop art icon, dies at 88

Peter Max, the influential psychedelic pop artist who defined the visual aesthetic of the 1960s 'flower power' movement, has died at the age of 88. His death was confirmed by his son, Adam Max, who noted the artist’s extraordinary creativity and warmth.

Born Peter Max Finkelstein in Berlin in 1937, he fled Nazi Germany as a child, eventually settling in New York City at age 16. His career spanned graphic design, commercial advertising, and fine art, characterized by vibrant colors and cosmic imagery. His prolific work appeared on everything from postage stamps and album covers to cruise ships and airplanes.

Max’s notable achievements include designing the original MTV logo in the 1980s and serving as the official artist for major global events such as the Olympics, the Super Bowl, and the FIFA World Cup. He also famously painted portraits of various U.S. presidents and celebrities like Taylor Swift. Reports indicate he had been battling advanced dementia prior to his passing.
