Peter Milobar leaves BC Conservative caucus to sit as independent

Peter Milobar, the MLA for Kamloops-Centre and former finance critic for the British Columbia Conservatives, has announced his departure from the party to sit as an independent. Milobar stated that his values no longer align with the new direction of the party under Leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay.

The departure follows a leadership contest in May where Milobar ran against Findlay. Tensions between the two had previously surfaced regarding political records and Indigenous issues, including debates over the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.

Findlay acknowledged the decision, thanking Milobar for his service as Shadow Minister for Finance. Milobar’s exit, alongside other recent defections, reduces the Conservative caucus to 37 MLAs. There are now six independent members in the legislature, all of whom are former Conservatives.
