Peter Molyneux claims game industry hides use of AI

Video game developer Peter Molyneux has stated that the gaming industry is currently pretending not to use artificial intelligence, despite it being nearly impossible to program modern titles without it. In an interview with PC Gamer, the creator of Fable and Black & White suggested that studios avoid disclosing AI usage to prevent alienating players.

Molyneux cited research suggesting that a significant portion of the gaming community rejects titles that utilize AI. He attributed this stigma to early generative models, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, which produced low-quality or inappropriate content, leading to a public perception that “AI equals AI trash.”

While Molyneux supports using AI for prototyping, he cautioned against relying on it for final game assets. However, he maintains that almost all titles released in the last year have utilized these technologies, particularly within code autocompletion tools. He believes that once the technology moves past its current reputation for producing low-quality results, it will represent the “greatest advancement in creativity” for studios of all sizes.
