Peter Nygard convicted of sexual assault in Quebec court
Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard, 84, pleaded guilty in Montreal to sexual assault and forcible confinement of an 18‑year‑old woman for incidents that occurred in 1997‑98. He appeared by video link from an Ontario prison where he is already serving an 11‑year sentence for a 2023 Toronto conviction involving four other women. Prosecutor Jérôme Laflamme said the plea was unexpected, noting “Mr. Nygard’s change of heart was quite sudden.”
The court accepted the plea, did not hear the victim, and postponed sentencing pending a medical assessment. Nygard’s lawyer Gerri Wiebe said the strategy is intended to keep him in Canada while he fights U.S. federal racketeering and sex‑trafficking charges, arguing that extradition would endanger his health. A joint sentencing recommendation is scheduled for Oct. 2.
This conviction is the second Canadian sexual‑assault judgment against Nygard within two years, and it delays any possible extradition to the United States until Canadian proceedings are resolved.
