Benue Police arrest 46 suspects after Peter Obi convoy blockade

The Benue State Police Command has arrested 46 suspects following the blockade of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi’s convoy on the Makurdi-Gboko federal highway. The incident occurred on Tuesday while Obi was traveling to the Yelewata community to meet with families affected by recent violence.

While the NDC has accused the Benue State Government and an aide to Governor Hyacinth Alia of involvement in the obstruction, the state government has denied any participation. The NDC maintains that they had officially notified the police of the visit prior to the incident. Various political figures, including Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, have condemned the disruption, describing it as an assault on democratic values.

Police Commissioner Cletus Nwadiogbu stated that investigations are ongoing and authorities are working to identify and track the leaders of the group involved. The incident has raised concerns regarding political intolerance and public safety as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
