Atiku Abubakar demands disclosure of Nigeria-US health pact

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called on the Nigerian federal government to publish the full text of a five-year health memorandum of understanding signed with the United States on December 19, 2025.

Following the rejection of a similar health pact by Ghana, Atiku expressed concerns regarding whether Nigeria’s agreement contains similar controversial provisions related to medical records, pathogen information, and funding obligations. The agreement, which covers disease surveillance and health data systems, involves nearly $2 billion in U.S. grants, while Nigeria has committed to mobilizing approximately $3 billion in health spending over five years.

Atiku also questioned the government’s ability to meet its domestic financial commitments, citing existing challenges in healthcare funding and the release of appropriated capital projects.
