Peter Obi's 2027 Campaign Gains Broad Political Support and Highlights Healthcare Initiatives
Peter Obi is the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, with former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as his vice‑presidential running mate. Obi has publicly pledged to serve only one term if elected, a promise that Kwankwaso has said he trusts, stating, “I personally believe Peter Obi is a gentleman and I have every reason to trust him.”
During a campaign visit to Cross River State, Obi donated ₦10 million to the Catholic Maternity Hospital in Moniaya, Ogoja, urging greater investment in faith‑based and mission hospitals and emphasizing Nigeria’s high maternal and infant mortality rates. The donation was publicly announced on his X account.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) registrar praised Obi’s longstanding commitment to nursing education, noting his early financial support that enabled the establishment and success of the Millennium College of Nursing Sciences in Awka, which recently graduated 116 pioneer students with a 100 % pass rate.
Kwankwaso also warned that calls for a state police force stem from the federal government’s failure to address insecurity, cautioning that such a force could be vulnerable to political abuse.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s backing of the Obi‑Kwankwaso ticket was reiterated by former adviser Akin Osuntokun, who described Obasanjo as the “main sponsor” of the alliance and dismissed claims that Obasanjo supports President Bola Tinubu.
