Peter Obi outlines education and health reforms in Nigeria's presidential bid

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi says the country’s education crisis demands fundamental structural change rather than modest policy tweaks. He highlighted recent WAEC results, noting only 38.32% of candidates passed English and Mathematics in the 2024 WASSCE and just 32% passed the 2025 computer‑based exam, and pointed to the 2026 budget allocating merely ₦3.52 trillion (6.17% of total spending) to education, far below UNESCO recommendations.

Obi pledged to create a national task force to drastically cut out‑of‑school children, expand Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and grow apprenticeship programmes modelled on Germany’s dual‑education system. He said the NDC would increase funding for TVET institutions, partner with the private sector and faith‑based groups, and use these reforms to shift Nigeria from a consumption‑driven to a production‑based economy, generating jobs and sustainable growth while reinforcing civic and character education.
