Nigeria political figures weigh in on 2027 election prospects
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, several political figures have made significant statements regarding leadership and electoral strategy.
Political economist Professor Pat Utomi has declared that he will withdraw his support for Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, if Obi accepts a vice-presidential role instead of running for the presidency. Utomi also advocated for a national conversation to limit the age of executive candidates to 70 or below to ensure leadership is focused on the future.
Abia State Governor Alex Otti addressed his political stance, noting that as a member of the National Economic Council, he cannot openly oppose President Bola Tinubu’s potential re-election without causing government implosion. Otti distinguished his official support for the administration from the Labour Party’s presidential interests. Additionally, Otti expressed support for the fuel subsidy removal policy, arguing it has encouraged more responsible spending among citizens.
Other reactions include Archbishop Emeritus John Onaiyekan, who emphasized that voters, particularly the Igbo people, should be free to choose their leaders without interference from governors. Nollywood actor Laide Olabanji also voiced support for Peter Obi, urging Nigerians to prioritize effective leadership over ethnic considerations.
