Peter Obi safety concerns raised by IPOB lawyer
Ifeanyi Ejiofor, a human rights activist and lead counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has raised alarms regarding the personal safety of Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
Speaking in Abuja, Ejiofor urged President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to protect Obi and preserve the democratic space, stating that “Nigeria must not wait for tragedy before it acts.” The call for protection follows comments made by Obi during a prime-time interview on Arise TV, where he expressed apprehension about his safety and whether he would live to see the 2027 election.
Ejiofor emphasized that Obi’s concerns should not be dismissed as mere campaign rhetoric. He noted a troubling atmosphere surrounding the upcoming political season, citing Obi’s previous complaints regarding campaign difficulties in certain states and a recent incident in Benue involving the obstruction of his convoy.
