Peter Obi warns of security emergency in Nigeria
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued warnings regarding rising insecurity and has called for increased political engagement among Nigerian youth.
Addressing recent violence in the North-Central region, Obi described the situation in Benue, Plateau, and Niger states as a national security emergency. He noted that in Mangu, Plateau State, official reports state at least 23 people were killed in the Jwak Maitumbi attack, though local residents estimate the toll exceeds 30. Additionally, over 45 houses were reportedly destroyed. In Borgu, Niger State, attacks reportedly left over 40 dead and more than 100 people abducted.
Obi urged all levels of government to take decisive action to protect vulnerable communities, improve intelligence, and prosecute those responsible. He emphasized that the country must not become a killing field.
Separately, Obi encouraged Nigerian youths to translate their passion for European football into active participation in the democratic process. He announced plans to spend the next 150 days engaging with young people through town hall meetings and educational institutions to prepare for the 2027 general elections.
