Peter Paul Rubens painting held at Norton Simon Museum
The painting ‘Women at the Tomb’ (1611-14) by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is held at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena.
The oil on wood work is based on the Gospel of Luke 24:1-11. It depicts the biblical scene where Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary mother of James, and other women visit the tomb early in the week, find the stone overturned and the body of Jesus missing, and encounter two men in shining clothes who announce his resurrection.
