Peter Pellegrini addresses EU veto rights and Slovak local elections

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini has addressed two major political topics: upcoming local elections and the future of the European Union.

Following a summit of the Arraiolos Group in Slovenia, Pellegrini emphasized that Slovakia must maintain its right to veto in the European Union on critical matters of national interest. He warned against EU reforms that could create a two-tier system of member states, arguing that such a division could lead to the gradual dissolution of the Union. Regarding security, he advocated for increased European defense spending but insisted these investments must be driven by the independent decisions of member states rather than external pressures.

Separately, ahead of the regional and municipal elections scheduled for Saturday, October 24, Pellegrini urged citizens to select local representatives based on their individual abilities and proven track records of service. He noted that while many candidates run with political party support, voters should focus on the personalities and their capacity to manage the practical, daily needs of their specific municipalities and regions.
