Slovakia approves 30 million euros in drought compensation for farmers

The Slovak government has approved 30 million euros in compensation for farmers following extreme drought conditions in 2026. The Slovak Agricultural and Food Chamber (SPPK) welcomed the decision, noting that the drought has severely impacted autumn crops and fodder production, threatening livestock stability and national food security.

In the Považie region, yields for cereals have dropped by 35%, while rapeseed yields fell between 20% and 30%. Fodder production, critical for winter livestock supplies, has reached only 30% to 40% of normal levels in some areas. This shortage poses a risk of reduced domestic production of milk and meat, potentially increasing reliance on imports.

At the Agrokomplex 2026 exhibition, President Peter Pellegrini emphasized that food self-sufficiency is as vital as energy and defense security. He called for strategic, long-term measures to combat drought and heatwaves rather than just tactical damage repair. Additionally, the President highlighted the economic importance of protecting the origin of traditional regional products to boost local prosperity and tourism.
